Logo Design for DFW Poetry
Dallas Fort Worth is a giant metroplex inside a very large and diverse state. This is one of the reasons I was so excited to bring DFW Poetry vision to life with a logo for their collective and annual festival. I wanted to represent the tender heart of writers, poets, and literary nerds I know and love in my hometown.
Texans, surround by remarkable plains stretching over 800 miles across, are sometimes stereotypically categorized as cowboys. While there are a great many cowboys in Texas, our history goes much deeper than ranches and farms. Dallas sits on the ancestral lands of numerous Indigenous peoples, and was also owned by Mexico, colonized by Spain, and home to immigrants from all over the world today.
One central theme that all Texans can attest to is the warm sunset. This was my central theme for the logo. I wanted to evoke the stoicism, introspection, and deep inner world that comes to life when appreciating the simple beauty of nature.
The two-color block-printing-style design ensures easy printing on various mediums, from T-shirts to event signage, while the halftone texture adds depth to the Texas sky. I’ve included some examples of applications for the event—merch, coffee mugs, badges, menus and signage are shown in mockups creating a scene for event programming, community, and location.
